Greater White-fronted Goose: Five were found on the Kingston CBC on the 1st. Bob Royse reported there were at least a dozen on the Upper Sandusky Reservoir on the 1st. Jason Larson and many observers saw 14 at Pond 27 at Killdeer Plains on the 3rd.
Snow Goose: Jill Bowers reported one at Grand Lake-St Marys on the 1st. Joe Faulkner had one fly over his property on the 2nd. Jared Merriman saw five at Melvin Gravel Pit on the 1st. Ned Keller also saw five at Melvin’s on the 3rd. Rob Thorn reported two immature birds were found on the O’Shaughnessy CBC on the 3rd. They were in the ponds in the front of the Scotts Lawncare factory southeast of Marysville, along Industrial Way (the road that parallels US 33). Eric Burkholder and Mark Gilsdorf watched 20 flying over head on the 3rd at Armleder Park. Greg Bennett reported a blue phase goose at Beddell Rd at Berlin Reservoir on the 3rd. Jason Larson and many observers saw 14 at Pond 27 at Killdeer Plains on the 3rd. Doug Vogus reported 24 were found on the Ottawa NWR CBC held on the 4th. John Petruzzi reported that a single blue-phase was on a frozen pond toward the end of Mahan-Denham Rd at Mosquito Creek WA on the 4th.
Ross’s Goose: Rob Thorn reported that a possible Ross’s found on the O’Shaughnessy CBC at Scotts Lawncare on the 3rd. Jason Larson and many observers saw four adults and one immature at Pond 27 at Killdeer Plains on the 3rd.
Cackling Goose: Bob Powell reported there were two at the Melvin Gravel Pits on the 1st. Jay Lehman found three in a pond on the south side of Rte 32 about 1/3 of a mile east of Eastwood Rd on the 1st. Rob Thorn reported one at Scotts Lawncare on the 3rd. One was found at Lake Pippen in Portage County on the 3rd. One was found at Upper Sandusky Reservoir on the 3rd. Brad Sparks reported that four were found at Pickerington Ponds MP on the 5th. Tom Kemp reported two on the 5th at the Bowling Green University golf course pond. Joe Faulkner reported that he and Vicki had two fly over Ellis Pond at Pickerington Ponds MP on the 7th.
Wood Duck: A male was reported at the upper end of Acton Lake (Hueston Woods SP) mixed in with Mallards on the 2nd. Bob Royse reported a drake in the Scioto River along the bike path south of 5th Ave on the 2nd. Doug Vogus reported a drake at a pond on Quick Rd in Cuyahoga Falls on the 6th.
Northern Pintail: Another remarkable week for Pintails in Ohio. Heather Raymond reported 34 were at Hoover Reservoir on the 1st. Bob Royse report some were on Pond 27 at Killdeer Plains on the 1st. Bob Powell reported five were at the Melvin Gravel Pit on the 1st. Gabe Leidy reported that 25 flew overhead at Lorain Harbor on the 2nd. Craig Rieker located an amazing 500 on the south side of Rte 6 just west of Rte 510 in Sandusky County on the on the 2nd. Jay and Jack Stenger found two at Hueston Woods SP on the 2nd. About 20 were found at the Upper Sandusky Reservoir in the 3rd. At Englewood MP in Montgomery County some were found on the 3rd. Greg Bennett reported some were present at Beddell Rd at Berlin Reservoir on the 3rd. Doug Vogus reported 22 at Ottawa NWR during the CBC on the 4th. Ed and Bev Neubauer reported that there were 110+ at Englewood MP on the 5th. Bob Royse reported some were found at Deer Creek SP on the 5th. Craig Holt reported 10 at E. 72nd St on the 6th.
Harlequin Duck: John Pogacnik reported a young male was seen during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 4th. It may be the same bird he saw on December 28th.
White-winged Scoter: Craig Holt had a flyby while at Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula on the 1st. John Pogacnik reported one during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 1st.
Black Scoter: Bob Royse found one at Sims Park on the 3rd.
Long-tailed Duck: Gabe Leidy reported that three were present at E. 72nd St on the 1st. Craig Holt reported one was at Conneaut and two were at Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula on the 1st. John Pogacnik reported two females during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 2nd. On the third found a male and a female on Lakeshore Waterbird Survey. Jen Brumfield reported that five were seen from E. 72nd St on the 3rd.
Red-necked Grebe: Jason Larson reported one east of E. 72nd St on the 2nd.
American White Pelican: Jill Bowers reported two at Grand Lake-St. Marys on the 1st. Photos were taken of the birds. The pelicans were found in Montezuma Bay and Jill was told they have been around since November 20, 2008. From US 127 take OH 703 past the Mercer WA to the first road on the left. Drive into the Kozy Campground to the second drive and head east to the lake. Jill reported to the compiler that the birds were not seen in the morning on the 2nd but were back at 4:30 PM. They were seen again on the 3rd at the end of Bruce Rd off of Rte 219.
Golden Eagle: John Kuenzli reported an immature was at Killdeer Plains on the 31st. Blake Mathys was able to get photo documentation of the bird. Russell Reynolds found possibly the same bird on the 4th. Tom Kemp reported one was found in Wood County just south and east of the Rte 64 bridge during the Grand Rapids-Waterville CBC on the 3rd. John Pogacnik saw an immature fly over Rte 2 in Painesville Township about a mile west of the Grand River on the 6th.
Merlin: Lou Gardella reported there was a female in Section 90 and a male and female in Section 70 of Calvary Cemetery on the 1st about 5:00 PM. Jason Larson reported the female was in Section 90 again on the 2nd. Charlie Bombaci and his group located a Merlin along the edge of the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir just south of the Twin Lakes Preserve Area and across from the Columbus Zoo during the CBC on the 3rd. Joe Bens reported one was seen about a mile outside of Bethel on the 3rd. William Hull reported one was at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati on the 4th about 4:30 PM. Paul Krusling reported one at Old St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati on the 5th. Tom Kemp reported one at the cemetery in Perrysburg on the NW corner of Rtes 25 and 65 on the 5th.
Killdeer: Ethan Kistler reported there were two at the end of Pointview Ave at Lake Milton in Mahoning County on the 2nd.
Black-legged Kittiwake: A rare inland visitor was an immature found by Dave Slager at the south end of Hoover Reservoir on the 1st. Dave was able to get photos and there were many observers of the bird. Su Snyder and Jason Larson reported the bird was still present on the 3rd. Charlie Bombaci located the bird further north than usual at Area B on the 6th. Bob Foppe reported the bird at Hoover was still present as of 11:00 AM on the 8th. Bob saw the bird from The Parking A lot.
BLACK-HEADED GULL: John Pogacnik reported one during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 1st.
Little Gull: John Pogacnik saw one adult at E. 72nd St on the 1st.
Franklin’s Gull: Gabe Leidy reported one at Lorain Harbor on the 2nd.
Thayer’s Gull: One adult at E. 72nd St was reported by Gabe Leidy on the 1st. Jason Larson reported one adult and one 1st year at E. 72nd St on the 2nd. Jen Brumfield reported two 1st cycle birds on the 2nd and three on the 3rd at E. 72nd Street. Gabe Leidy reported one 1st cycle at E. 72nd St on the 6th. Craig Holt saw two on the 6th at E. 72nd Street.
Iceland Gull: Gabe Leidy reported two 1st cycle and one adult at E. 72nd St on the 1st. John Pogacnik reported one 1st cycle during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 1st. Gabe Leidy reported one 1st cycle at Lorain Harbor on the 2nd. Jen Brumfield reported eight 1st cycle birds and a 2nd cycle bird on the 2nd at E. 72nd St. Jen Brumfield reported that six first winter birds were seen on the 3rd from E. 72nd Street. Gabe Leidy found five 1st cycle on the 6th at E. 72nd Street.
Lesser Black-backed Gull: John Pogacnik reported two adult and one 2nd cycle on the 1st during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey. John also saw five at E. 72nd St on the 1st. One adult and one 2nd-winter were seen by Jen Brumfield on the 3rd and at E. 72nd Street. Bob Royse reported finding some at Avon Lake on the 3rd. A 3rd cycle and an adult were reported by Gabe Leidy at E. 72nd St on the 6th.
Glaucous Gull: Gabe Leidy reported that three 1st cycle birds were found at E. 72nd St on the 1st. In addition to Gabe’s sightings John Pogacnik reported an adult and two 2nd cycles. John Pogacnik reported one adult and one 1st cycle during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 1st. Gabe Leidy reported two adults at Lorain Harbor on the 2nd. Jason Larson reported at least 10 of different ages at E. 72nd St on the 2nd. At least five 1st–winter birds were found by Jen Brumfield on the 3rd. Gabe Leidy found a 1st cycle and a second cycle at E. 72nd St on the 6th.
Pomarine Jaeger: John Pogacnik reported one during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 3rd.
Eurasian Collared-Dove: Two were found at 8:30 AM on Orchard St in West Manchester, Preble County, on the 3rd.
Snowy Owl: John Pogacnik reported that a group of birders had seen the immature owl at Burke Airport on the 1st. Dan Sanders reported an adult at the Burke Lakefront Airport, West of E. 55th Street, along N. Marginal Road. This all-white beauty (probably an adult male) was perched about 4 feet off the ground on what looked like a large earth-moving machine at the far NE end of the airport, way past the end of the airstrips. This could be the same adult that was reported in 2008 at this location. Matt Valencic reported that a Burke AP employee told him the owl was still present at the west of end of the airport on the 5th.
Long-eared Owl: Rick Counts flushed one that was located on a private residence in Hardin County on the 1st. Five were found in the alternate owl grove at Killdeer Plains on the 3rd. Doug Vogus reported that three were found on the Ottawa NWR CBC on the 4th. The Bobolink Hotline of the 3rd reported one was back on Levi Miller’s property. To get permission to see the bird please call Levi at 330-852-3029. One was found in the Maumee SF along Rd 2 south of Neowash in Henry County on the 3rd by Craig Nilsson.
Northern Saw-whet Owl: Dave Dvorak reported that one was seen in a Spruce tree through the fence at Dike 14 behind the park headquarters on the 2nd. The Bobolink Hotline of the 3rd reported one was back on Levi Miller’s property. To get permission to see the bird please call Levi at 330-852-3029. During the Grand Rapids-Waterville CBC on the 3rd two were found in Oak Openings, one in Maumee SF and one at Blue Creek Wetlands just south of Whitehouse.
Eastern Phoebe: Bob Royse reported one along the Scioto River in Columbus at the end of Lakeshore Dr south of 5th Ave on the 2nd. Chris Knoll reported one right behind the nature center at Maumee Bay SP on the 7th.
Northern Shrike: Chris Knoll reported that one was still present on the 1st along the causeway at Magee Marsh. Bob Royse reported one was found on TH-123 south of Pond 3 at Killdeer Plains on the 1st. Dan Barda reported one at the corner of Sager and Wilkins on the 1st. Sandy Brown found one at Bath Nature Preserve on the 4th. The shrike was working the area west of the North Fork Trail--near marker #3 and around pond #4. A shrike was found at the south end Deer Creek SP on the 4th. The shrike was found at the beginning of the road going to the beach. One was found by Dan Barda at Sager & Wilkins and another at Whitehouse and Berridge by Diane DeYonker during on the 3rd during the Grand Rapids-Waterville CBC. The shrike at Jaite Marsh was still present on the 6th. Inga Schmidt reported one in Geauga County on the 8th.
White-eyed Vireo: Amy Winnicki found a very likely white-eye at Nature Realm Park in Fairlawn on the 2nd. The bird was very well described by Amy.
Tree Swallow: Very rare in January John Pogacnik sighted three during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 1st.
Red-breasted Nuthatch: Bruce Simpson reported one was seen at Thoreau Lake in Blendon Woods on the 1st. Ethan Kistler reported that 11 were found on the 1st at Headwaters Park during the Burton CBC. Swan Creek (formerly Monclova) Cemetery located at Rte 20-A and Coder Rd held a few on the 1st. Greg Bennett found some at Horseshoe Pond in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park on the 2nd. One was found by Dave Brinkman in Section 99 of Spring Grove Cemetery on the 2nd. Some were found on the 3rd during the Hocking Hills CBC. Bob Royse reported two were foraging in the pines at the northbound I-71 rest stop in Medina County on the 3rd. Bob Royse found some at Scioto Trail SF on the 5th. One was reported at Goll Woods Nature Preserve on the 6th.
Winter Wren: Kathi Hutton found one at Crooked Run Nature Preserve in Clermont County on the 1st. Jay Lehman located one at the spillway of East Fork SP on the 1st. Bob Royse reported one along the Scioto River in Columbus at the end of Lakeshore Dr just south of 5th Ave on the 2nd. Doug Vogus reported two were found on the Ottawa NWR CBC on the 4th. Bob Royse had one at Scioto Trail SF on the 5th. There was one at Maumee Bay SP on the 7th.
Marsh Wren: A rare wintering resident one was reported at Killbuck WA on the 1st by Ryan Steiner. The bird was found along Force Road. Nancy Howell found one on the 30th along the boardwalk at Lake Abrams Wetlands located off of Eastland Rd about ½ mile north of Bagley in Berea.
Ruby-crowned Kinglet: Neill Cade reported two at Fernbank Park in Hamilton County on the 1st. Kirk Westendorf reported one at United American Cemetery near Camp Dennison on the 1st. Two were found on the Hocking Hills CBC on the 3rd. Keith Robinson reported one was found at Crooked Run Nature Preserve on the 3rd. On the 5th Bob Royse found one at Scioto Trail SF. Steve Stockford and Joe Fausnaugh discovered one in Bend View MP on the 3rd during the Grand Rapids-Westerville CBC.
Gray Catbird: Jay and Jack Stenger saw one along the side of the road along Rte 27 just north of Ross in Butler County. One was found at the right side of the parking lot at Mudhen Marsh at Hoover Reservoir on the 4th. Two were reported on the Bobolink Hotline of the 3rd. One is in Knox County and the other just south of Mt Hope.
Northern Mockingbird: One was seen during the Kingston CBC on the 1st. Keith Robinson reported two were found at Crooked Run Nature Preserve during the Clermont County Park District’s Winter Bird Count on the 3rd. Matt Valencic had one fly in front of car at the E. 72nd St exit off I-90 on the 5th. Two were found at Spring Grove Cemetery on the 8th, one in Section 100 around the pond and the other at the top of Section 132.
Brown Thrasher: Pete Montion found one on private property during the Grand Rapids-Waterville CBC on the 3rd.
Orange-crowned Warbler: Bob Foppe and Bill Doss relocated the bird found on private property during the Cincinnati CBC last week. It appears the bird has been around for about three weeks. Dave Slager reported one on the 4th at his home 485 Vermont Place in Columbus. The warbler soon worked its way westward across the Battelle parking lot and towards the wooded margin of the Olentangy River. Dave recommends checking along the river first.
Pine Warbler: The Bobolink Hotline of the 3rd reported two were just south of Barrs Mills and one was at Baltic.
Palm Warbler: The Bobolink Hotline of the 7th reported that one was coming to the feeder of Don and Katy Norris. For more information call the Norris’s at 330-695-3002.
Chipping Sparrow: Matt Anderson found three feeding on cedar cone seeds on the ground at Whitehouse Cemetery on the 3rd.
Fox Sparrow: One was seen by many observers at the Blendon Woods Nature Center feeders on the 1st. John Watts reported two were at the Highbanks MP feeders on the 8th.
Lapland Longspur: One was mixed in with a flock of snow buntings found by Craig Holt on the 1st at Pymatuning Reservoir. Bob Royse had three flocks along Morral-Kirkpatrick Rd on the 1st.
Snow Bunting: Craig Holt reported that there were 15+ on the causeway at Pymatuning Reservoir on the 1st. Doug Vogus reported that 22 were found on the Ottawa NWR CBC on the 4th.
Dickcissel: Bruce Simpson reported on the 1st that the bird at Blendon Woods continues to come to the feeders at the Nature Center. It was seen three times between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM. Bob Foppe reported the bird was still present on the 8th.
Baltimore Oriole: The Bobolink reports that one has been coming to a Knox County feeder for the past few weeks. The feeder is on private property and permission must be granted by the owners before looking for the bird. From Loudonville take Rte 3 south to Daniels (turn right). Then make another right onto Amity-Butler Road. Go approximately one mile and make a left onto Ernest Road. Go past the school house about ¾ mile to Raper’s Deer Processing.
Red Crossbill: Matt Anderson reported one at Swan Creek Cemetery on the 3rd. To get to the cemetery from Oak Openings take Rte 295 north to 20A, turn east and go about five miles. The cemetery will be on the left as the road dips into the Swan Creek Valley.
White-winged Crossbill: Ryan Steiner reported three at Secrest Arboretum on the 1st, a lone female and two males. John Pogacnik had three in his Spruce tree on the 1st. Dave English reported 12 on Taylor-May Rd about ½ mile west of SR 44 in Auburn Township, Geauga County on the 1st. Sherry Plessner reported that they saw five in Section 25 of Woodlawn Cemetery on the 1st. On the 2nd up to 12 were seen there. Five were reported at Swan Creek (formerly Monclova) Cemetery on the 2nd. Jim Heflich reported one made a brief visit to his feeder in South Euclid on the 3rd. Jim McCormac reported that 49 were found on the Hocking Hills CBC on the 3rd. Most of the birds were found along Clear Creek Road. Matt Anderson found four on the 3rd at the intersection of Rte 295 and Reed Road. Brad Sparks had three there on the 4th. Heather Raymond told Brad that 40 had been seen there earlier in the day. Matt Anderson found 15 at Swan Creek Cemetery on the 4th. The Bobolink Hotline of the 3rd reported that flocks of up to 30 were being seen in the area. The best places to look are at the Shrine or Gorge Overlook at Mohican SP and in Loudonville in the cemetery north of town on Rte 60 or at the nursing home on Rte 3 (Mt Vernon Rd). Joseph Miller, David Weaver and Jim Miller saw a flock of 36 at the gorge overlook in Mohican SP on the 5th. Fifteen were seen at Swan Creek Cemetery on the 8th at about 10:45 AM. Ethan Kistler reported four were found during the Burton CBC on SR 322 at the Headwaters Park trailhead.
Common Redpoll: John Pogacnik reported three in alder trees next to his property in North Perry on the 1st. Matt Kemp found one in Oak Openings near Obee and Rte 295 on the 3rd. Rick Asamoto, Shane Egleston and Jim Hickman found one at the Caesar Creek SP visitor center feeder on the 3rd. Larry Gara reported this bird was still being seen at the back feeder on the 5th. This bird has not been seen since the 6th. Lukas Padegimas reported that at least four were coming to the feeders at the Nature Center and Nature Education Building at North Chagrin on the 5th. A flock of 13 were seen feeding in a field behind a private residence on Fountain Nook Rd on the 5th close to Kidron all day. Ben Morrison had two visit his feeder on the 6th in Stark County. Barb Hohman had one coming to her feeder in Devola, Washington County on the 7th. Roger Troutman reported that he received a call that about 15 were coming to a private feeder in Richland County, about 6-8 miles southwest of Mohican State Forest on the 7th.
Pine Siskin: Ryan Steiner reported roughly 60 at Secrest Arboretum on the 1st. Bruce Simpson reported one being seen at the Blendon Woods Nature Center Bird Viewing Window on the 1st. Dorothy Dawson-Sheldon reported siskins coming to her feeder in Wakeman, Lorain County on the 1st. Chris Knoll reported a female was visiting the BSBO feeder on the 1st. Ethan Kistler reported 10 were found during the Burton CBC on the 1st. Gene and Debbie Knox had six at their feeder on the 1st. John Pogacnik had around 45 in alder trees next to his property in North Perry on the 1st. Kirk Westendorf reported three at Spring Grove Cemetery. One was seen at a feeder in Athens County on the 1st. Jim McCormac reported that 213 were tallied on the Hocking Hills CBC held on the 3rd. Joshua Eastlake reported three were visiting the feeders at the Cincinnati Nature Center on the 3rd. Mike Yough reported three to five at the Greenlawn Cemetery feeders on the 4th. One was found during the Ottawa NWR CBC on the 4th. Keith Robinson reported four were found on the 3rd at Crooked Run Nature Preserve. John Petruzzi reported that a small group was coming to his feeder in Boardman on the 4th. Craig Holt had 16 at his feeders in Poland Township, Mahoning County, on the 5th. Bob Royse reported seeing them at a couple of places in Scioto Trail SF on the 5th. Lukas Padegimas reported that dozens were coming to the feeders at North Chagrin on the 5th. Ben Morrison had 30 come to his feeder in Stark County on the 6th. Barb Hohman had over 100 coming to her feeder in Devola, Washington County on the 7th. Dick Beery reported on the 7th that two came to his feeder south of Shreve. Chris Knoll reported four were at the Windows on Wildlife feeders at Pearson MP on the 7th. A flock of 20-30 was seen at Harriet Keeler Memorial near the Brecksville Reservation Nature Center on the 8th. Jim Fry reported that 167 came to his feeder on the 8th in northwest Hocking County. One was seen at the Cincinnati Nature Center feeder on the 8th.
