Corrigendum: This compiler erroneously reported in the January 8, 2009 Ohio RBA that Ethan Kistler reported four Marsh Wrens on the Burton CBC. These were actually White-winged Crossbills.
Greater White-fronted Geese: Shane Egleston found two at the West Carrollton gravel pit on the 15th.
Snow Goose: Peter Kavouras reported five at the IKEA pond in West Chester on the 9th. Dave Slager found two immature blue-phase in south-east Columbus on the 11th. Doug Overacker found four in a gravel pit pond on Laybourne Rd near the Clark County Fairgrounds on the 11th. Bob Royse reported ten at Lake White SP on the 12th. Shane Egleston reported one was at the West Carrollton gravel pit on the 15th. Sarah Hume reported that five were on a pond in The Preserve apartment complex on Beckett Rd in Butler County on the 15th.
Ross's Goose: Bill Doss saw one at Camp Dennison on the 11th and other observers found it on the 12th. Allan Claybon reported the bird was still present on the 15th.
Brant: Two were seen on the Ohio side of the Ohio River at Willow Island on the 10th.
Cackling Goose: Nate Nye reported on the 10th that he had four, perhaps five, at a pond at the intersection of Crystalpond Rd and Spindler Rd in Hilliard. On Ellis Pond at Pickerington Ponds on the 11th Ken Davis found one. Three were found at the West Carrollton gravel pit on the 15th.
Wood Duck: Barb Hohman reported a drake was found at Newell's Run on the 11th. Doug Overacker reported a male was seen on Buck Creek near the Croft Rd bridge in Old Reid Park, Clark County on the 11th. Bob Royse reported two were on the Scioto River on the 13th. To get to these birds park in the River Edge office complex on Rte 33 south of 5th Ave parking in the southernmost point near the small quarry pond. Walk up the hill to the bike path and walk toward the bridges for I-670.
Northern Pintail: Two were reported on the 9th at the IKEA pond by Peter Kavouras. Larry Gara reported one was found at Melvin Quarry on the 9th. Allan Claybon reported some were at Fernald on the 9th. Ken Davis found several north of the Smothers Rd bridge at Hoover Reservoir on the 11th. Doug Overacker found some in a gravel pit pond on Laybourne Rd in Clark County on the 11th. Bob Royse reported there were at least 200 present at Lake White SP, Ross County on the 12th and two along Moore's Lane in Shawnee SF on the 12th. Kirk Westendorf found 12 at Fernald on the 12th. Several were huddled among the Canada Geese on Ellis Pond at Pickerington Ponds MP on the 14th. Adam Cirone reported some were in the spillway at Hoover Res on the 14th. Eric Burkholder found one male at Armeleder Park on the 14th. Six were at the West Carrollton gravel pit on the 15th. The Mountwood Bird Club braved the cold on the 15th and checked off pintail along the Muskingum River between Marietta and five miles above Lowell.
Horned Grebe: Jay Lehman found two at the end of Harveysburg Rd at Caesar Creek on the 11th. Bob Foppe reported two were at Camp Dennison on the 12th.
American White Pelican: Jill Bowers reported on the 11th that the two were still present at Grand Lake St. Marys near the Kozy Campground area.
Northern Goshawk: Jay Wootten reported seeing an immature bird in his yard in northern Columbiana County on the 14th.
Golden Eagle: One was reported at The Wilds on the 9th. Dave Minney saw an immature bird at the Edge of Appalachia in Adams County on the 15th. The bird was seen by Pete Whan and many others as well. This was only the second one that Pete has seen in Adams County in the 20 years he has lived there.
Merlin: Bill Zimmerman saw a female at Old St. Joseph's Cemetery in Cincinnati on the 10th. The bird was seen at 0830 at the top of and just east of the main north-south road that bisects the cemetery. On the same day and location Ned Keller and Kathy McDonald found two and possibly a third in the evening. Ken Davis reported one flew over the Pit at Greenlawn Cemetery on the 11th. Michele Hendrick reported one near the lake at Silvercreek MP in Summit County on the 11th. One was reported from Pearson MP on the 11th. Paul Hurtado reported one in the Grandview Height area near the intersection of Dublin Rd and Watermark Dr on the 13th. Dave Slager reported one on the OSU Campus near Drake Union (between the Olentangy River and the two towers) on the 13th. One is wintering at Lake View Cemetery again this year. One was reported by Chris Knoll to be in Woodlawn Cemetery on the 12th.
Killdeer: Ken Davis reported one was walking on the ice at Pickerington Ponds on the 11th.
Black-legged Kittiwake: Jim McCormac reported that the kittiwake first reported by Dave Slager on the 1st remained at Hoover Reservoir on the 10th. It was being observed with Ring-billed gulls along the west side of the reservoir ranging from the first parking lot north of the dam to nearly the first bridge across the lake. Many observers saw the bird again on the 11th near the dam. Christopher Taylor observed one first-year at E. 72nd St on the 11th at about 2:30 PM.
BLACK-HEADED GULL: Jen Brumfield reported one was present at E. 72nd St on the 9th.
CALIFORNIA GULL: Jen Brumfield reported that one was at E. 72nd St on the 8th.
Thayer's Gull: A first-cycle and a second-cycle were reported by Jen Brumfield at E. 72nd St on the 9th. Gabe Leidy reported one first-cycle was at E. 72nd St on the 11th. Paul Hurtado reported one or two were at E. 72nd St on the 14th.
Iceland Gull: Five adults and nine plus first- and second cycle birds were reported at E. 72nd St on the 9th by Jen Brumfield. Gabe Leidy found six first-cycle and a second-cycle at the same location on the 11th. At Avon Lake Gabe Leidy found one on the 11th. John Pogacnik had one first-cycle fly by during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 11th. Paul Hurtado reported one was at E. 72nd St on the 14th.
Lesser Black-backed Gull: Jen Brumfield reported at least six adults and three first-cycles at E. 72nd St on the 9th. Gabe Leidy found three adults there on the 11th. On the 14th Paul Hurtado reported one adult was at E. 72nd Street.
Glaucous Gull: At least five adults and three first-cycles were reported by Jen Brumfield on the 9th at E. 72nd Street. Gabe Leidy found one adult, a third-cycle and two first-cycle birds at E. 72nd St on the 11th. Christopher Taylor reported a second-cycle at E. 72nd St on the 11th. Paul Hurtado reported there were one or two first-cycle birds and two adults at E. 72nd St on the 14th.
Long-eared Owl: The Bobolink Hotline on the 15th reports four have been seen at the Norma Johnson Center east of Sugarcreek on Rte 39.
Northern Shrike: The shrike originally reported on the 4th at Deer Creek SP was found again by Dave Horn at the east end of the beach parking lot on the 9th. It was seen again at 10:45 AM, 2:15 PM and 4:45 PM on the 11th along the road to the right at the four way intersection going to the beach. One that was originally reported on the 4th is still present at Bath Nature Preserve.
Red-breasted Nuthatch: Bea Delpapa reported one showed up at her feeder in Lisbon, Columbiana County on the 10th. Around the Pit at Greenlawn Cemetery on the 11th Ken Davis found one.
Winter Wren: Jason Larson found two at the western end of Dow Lake in Strouds Run SP just north of Athens on the 10th.
Marsh Wren: One of the Marsh Wrens originally reported by Jay Lehman on the 4th along the boardwalk at Spring Valley WA was seen on the 13th. This is at least the third year in a row that one has been seen there in January.
Ruby-crowned Kinglet: Shane Egleston found one at Mud Hen Marsh on the 11th. Ken Davis reported several were in the pine trees along the bike path between Drake Union and the Lane Ave bridge on the 11th.
Gray Catbird: One is still present to the right of the parking lot at Mud Hen Marsh as of the 11th.
Northern Mockingbird: One was reported by Jen Brumfield at E. 72nd St on the 9th.
Pine Warbler: Dave Slager reported one on the OSU campus in pine trees near Drake Union on the 13th.
Chipping Sparrow: Robert Sams reported one was coming to his parent's feeder in west Findley on the 11th. Tom Bain reported one was found at the Hogback Road Nature Preserve feeders in Delaware County on the 11th during one of the Park System's 2009 Bird Quest walks. That bird was still present at least through the 14th. One has been coming to a feeder this week in Hancock County. Adam Cirone reported several were at the feeder station at Pickerington Ponds MP on the 14th. Robert Morton had five coming to his backyard feeder in Fremont on the 14th.
Savannah Sparrow: Jay Lehman found one at Armeleder Park on the 10th.
Lapland Longspur: Russell Reynolds reported that some were along Acadia Rd between Delphos and Spencerville on the 9th. Doug Overacker found three near the south end of Hodge Rd just east of Buck Creek SP on the 11th. Gene Stauffer found a flock at the intersection of McGuire Rd and Hume Lever Rd in Madison County on the 12th. Bob Royse reported some have been present along Tagg Rd between Westley Chapel Rd and Roberts Rd in Licking County. Regina Schieltz reported some on a road east of Fort Jefferson and between Rtes 121 and 127 on the 14th. Shane Egleston found two dozen at the intersection of Rte 725 and Conservancy Rd near Germantown Reserve MP in Montgomery County on the 14th. Shane also found 100 on Quaker Trace Rd about one mile south of Rte 122 in Preble County on the 15th. Andy Bess reported some were in a mixed flock on Baughman Rd near Miami Whitewater Forest in Hamilton County on the 15th.
Snow Bunting: One was reported by Jen Brumfield at E. 72nd St on the 9th. Jill Bowers found one in Auglaize County on the 10th. Su Snyder reported nine were on Krauss Rd at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster on the 11th. Regina Schieltz reported three were on the road between Versailles and Greenville on the 11th. On Hodge Rd, just east of Buck Creek SP, Doug Overacker found ten on the 11th. Jay Lehman found a flock of 30 at the Morral-Nevada exit of Rte 23 on the 11th. Bob Royse found some along Westley Chapel Rd north of Johnstown in Licking County on the 11th. The Bobolink Hotline reported that 150 plus were seen at 7930 Township Rd 567 on the 13th. Dorothy Dawson-Sheldon reported a flock along Becker Rd near Gore Orphanage on the 13th. Regina Schieltz reported some on a road east of Fort Jefferson and between Rtes 121 and 127 on the 14th. Ken and Julie Davis reported they found a flock of over 30 at the NE corner of Westley Chapel and Downing Rd near Croton on the 14th. Shane Egleston reported 24 were at the intersection of Rte 725 and Conservancy Rd in Montgomery County on the 14th and on the 15th he found 150 on Quaker Rd in Preble County about one mile south of Rte 122. Andy Bess reported some were in a mixed flock on Baughman Rd near Miami Whitewater in Hamilton County on the 15th.
Dickcissel: Bruce Simpson reported that the Dickcissel that first appeared on December 14, 2008 at Blendon Woods was still coming to the feeders on a regular basis on the 10th. Many observers saw the bird on the 11th. Bill Heck saw the bird again at 4:00 PM on the 15th.
Baltimore Oriole: Jim McCormac reported that the male first reported coming to a Worthington feeder on December 21, 2008 has returned on the 15th. The bird came to a feeder near the junction of Rte 315 and Rte 161 and another feeder about 800 yards away at Jim's parents house. Photos were taken at both sites and they will be examined to determine if this is one bird or two different ones.
Red Crossbill: Gary Cowell reported he had one flyover on the 10th in Lexington, Richland County.
White-winged Crossbill: According to Peterjohn it has been 40 years since white-wings have been seen in such "unprecedented numbers" in Ohio. Heather Nagy en route between Alexandria and Pataskala heard and then saw a flock of White-winged Crossbills in spruce trees along Jersey Mill Road, about 1/2-mile east of State Road 310 on the 9th. Joe Faulkner found one in his yard in Perry County, just south of Somerset on the 9th. Gary Cowell reported he had 18 on Lexington-Ontario Rd in a spruce tree between Sherwood Drive and Oxford Road in Richland County on the 10th. Matt Anderson reported two visited his neighbor's yard in Whitehouse on the 10th. Gary Cowell had 18 feeding in a Blue Spruce in Lexington. Sherry Plessner reported 20 were at Woodland Cemetery on the 11th. Matt Anderson reported 13 were at the intersection of Reed and Rte 295 in Oak Openings on the 11th. Chris Knoll reported over 60 at Woodlawn Cemetery on the 12th. Lynn Riley reported 30 or more were coming to spruce and cedar trees in Mt Vernon at the intersection of Hwy 229 East and Fox Chase Dr on the 15th. Matt Anderson reported on the 15th that at least 78 were at Swan Creek Cemetery.
Common Redpoll: Lukas Padegimas reported on the 10th that one continues to visit the feeder at the North Chagrin Nature Center. John Pogacnik reported that 14 visited his property on the 10th. Scott Albaugh reported 15 flew over while birding at Friendship Park near Smithfield, Jefferson County on the 11th. Chris Knoll reported ten were at Woodlawn Cemetery on the 12th in some Sweet Gum trees. Chris also reported one was at the thistle feeders at the Black Swamp Bird Observatory on the 14th. Jerry Cramer had two coming to his feeder in Ada on the 14th. Clyde Witt had one come to his feeder in Sagamore Hills on the 15th.
Pine Siskin: Kathi Hutton reported two were at the Cincinnati Nature Center feeders on the 9th. One continued at Craig Holt's feeder in Poland Township, Mahoning County on the 10th. Joe Faulkner had six coming to his feeder on the 10th in Somerset, Perry County. Barb Partington reported she had over 100 at her feeder on the 10th. John Pogacnik had 20-30 coming to his yard throughout the day on the 10th. Steve Pendleton reported siskins were coming to a feeder in the Little Turtle area about a half-mile north of Blendon Woods on the 11th. Ken Davis found two at the Pit in Greenlawn Cemetery on the 11th. Diane Brooks reported one in her yard in south-east Perry County on the 13th. One was coming to a feeder on Martindale Rd in Montgomery County on the 13th. Dan Weber reported that he has had up to nine visiting his feeder in Athens for about two weeks now. Chris Knoll reported ten were at Woodlawn Cemetery on the 12th in some Sweet Gum trees with the redpolls. Chris also reported two were at the thistle feeders at the Black Swamp Bird Observatory on the 14th. Donald Morse Jr. reported that he had over 20 coming to his feeder in New Richmond on the 14th. Clyde Witt had a flock of 25 coming to his feeder on the 15th. Dick Beery had four coming to his feeder in northern Holmes County on the 15th while counting for Project Feeder Watch.
