2011 - The Final Year!

Welcome to the sixth and final year of the Ohio Breeding Bird Atlas II project. Spring has sprung and we are pulling out all the stops this year in order to collectively create the most thorough census of breeding birds ever in our state. However, in order to do this we need your help!

OBBA II in the News!

We aren’t the only ones talking about the exciting last year of the OBBA II. This project has recently been featured in several media outlets, such as the Columbus Dispatch, the Cincinnati News, Fox News, and newspapers in Salt Lake City, San Antonio, and Albany, NY. Our very own atlas volunteers, Dan Sanders and Doreene Linzell, were featured in an article this past Sunday. Check it out here! and be sure to click on the Downy Woodpecker to view the short video of their field outing.

Columbus Dispatch

Start now: Owls, Woodcocks and other early nesters!

  • Owls and other nocturnal species are generally underrepresented in our surveys, in part because atlasers aren’t out as much in the evenings. Species such as Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls and Eastern Screech-Owls are nesting and vocalizing the most right NOW, and are already within safe dates. However, they are often quieter when atlasers are out in the field in late spring/summer. For tips on surveying for owls, check out this email from our online archives or contact us at (or via phone at 614-247-6458).
  • Woodcocks, another under-surveyed species, are already performing their magnificent displays, which peak in Ohio around mid-April.
  • For the above harder-to-survey species, please focus your efforts in priority blocks!
  • Several other species of nesting birds are already within safe dates such as Ruffed Grouse, many woodpeckers, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Northern Cardinal, Carolina Wren and more!

Take home message: It’s not too early to start atlasing!  In fact, this is a critical season that we need more data from!

Data Submission

If you have data from previous years, we need it NOW! You can either enter it yourself on our website or make a copy of it and send it in to us (see address below) and we will enter it for you! It is critical that we have this information in order to maximize our efforts in this last field season.

From everyone here at OBBA II, THANK YOU for your contributions to this exciting project. We sincerely believe that this project will be a important contribution to our knowledge and conservation of birds in Ohio and beyond. We couldn’t do it without you.

Happy birding!
