About Our Publications

ABOUT OUR PUBLICATIONS

Publications of the Ohio Ornithological Society take, or will take, many forms, both printed and web-based, and each is described in detail elsewhere on this web site. All publications, from books to short postings on the mailing list, are made possible by volunteers, and all but some internet postings come from OOS members on its behalf for the benefit of Ohio’s birds. Briefly put, they include:

(1) Books, booklets, pamphlets include substantial printed works of enduring value, and are envisioned to include reference works on Ohio ornithology such as an annotated checklist of the state’s birds, comprehensive bibliographies, a guide to birding in the state, studies of regional and local avifauna, photographic collections, etc. We welcome queries from authors for such works.

(2) A state ornithological journal, in the form of The Ohio Cardinal, to continue to enter occurrences of birds into the formal record, publish articles of lasting interest, record significant field observations, publicize important decisions of the Ohio Bird Records Committee, and otherwise serve as the journal of record for ornithology for the state. All OOS members receive the Cardinal, and others are welcome to subscribe.

(3) A quarterly membership newsletter, The Cerulean is the quarterly newsletter of the Ohio Ornithological Society. It offers timely information regarding upcoming field trips and meetings, recent bird sightings and current hot spots, trip reports, as well as other pertinent information about birds and birding in Ohio. A subscription to The Cerulean is included among the benefits of membership in the OOS.

(4) An online compendium of recent birding information, Birding News, is a frequently updated feature on this web site, with birding news from everywhere in the state, including sightings, trip, and rare bird reports, as well announcements concerning meetings, conferences, field trips, etc., which might be of special interest to Ohio birders. Mike Busam, the editor of this feature, can be reached at news@ohiobirds.org.

(5) Downloadable information of many kinds will be provided on this web site, from out-of-print publications on Ohio birds to helpful articles to archives and databases treating a wide variety of topics.

(6) Ohio Birding Blog, is a series of musings my Jim McCormac. Many of the entries will be pictorial essays, but others may be more editorial in nature.

(7) Ohio-birds, a mailing list for the state’s birders, is maintained by the Ohio Ornithological Society; the listowner is Ned Keller, who can be reached at listowner@ohiobirds.org. For a guide on subscribing to ohio-birds, go to www.ohiobirds.org/publications/emaillist.php. For reference purposes, archives of postings that have appeared on ohio-birds can be found on three Web locations, depending on date; links to those sites can be found at the above location. Thus, those who want to read posts to the list need not subscribe to do so; posters, on the other hand, must subscribe. Another source of short-term archives of ohio-birds is Jack Siler’s invaluable site, under “Ohio” at birdingonthe.net/birdmail.html

(8) Ohio Birding Forum, is an online message center that covers a broader range of subjects than the mailing list. The forum is on this web site, at www.ohiobirds.org/forum/index.php
