Checklists

Checklists are indispensable tools in exploring the bird life of a particular site, for quickly reviewing the local status of any species, and for maintaining and organizing personal records. Below we offer links to various helpful checklists. We invite readers’ suggestions for new ones.

Official Ohio state checklist: A simple list of all species currently recognized as having occurred in Ohio by the Ohio Bird Records Committee, which can be found here.

Annotated Ohio state checklist: NOTE: CURRENT THROUGH APRIL 2004. A list from the Ohio Bird Records Committee listing all species officially recognized from Ohio, with bar-graphs indicating seasonal occurrence and relative abundance, the numerical status of rarities since 1980, including brief annotations on nesting status, nature of evidence for inclusion, history of occurrence, and regional/habitat details. Unlike hard-copy versions, this on-line list undergoes periodic updates and is found here. To view this document, you will need the Adobe Reader, available for free download at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

Customized weekly checklists: Statewide and regional checklists, customized for each week of the year, which can be printed from the website, can be found here.

Ohio field checklists: Thanks to the efforts of some of our members, we can now offer you a variety of field checklists. All of them are PDF files, which can be printed onto the front and back of a single sheet of paper (check the size - three need legal size, unless they are printed in a reduced mode).

The first two were produced by Joe Hammond. They are simple multi-column checklists that can be used on multiple dates, for multiple locations, or for multiple observers. The two versions are:

The next two were created by Paul Gardner, Dan Sanders, Greg Miller, Bill Whan, and Joe Hammond. They add difficulty codes, which reflect how hard it is to find each species in Ohio. These two checklists are:

Future projects: We are interested in running on-line presentations of published checklists for Ohio locations, perhaps as part of our Ohio Site Guides service on this web site. We are also considering offering a checklist service, which will format others’ checklists in accordance with changing taxonomic standards, orthography, etc. as OOS-approved versions.

Other useful checklists: Many other checklists can be found on the web.
